Kundadri is a large rock hill rising above dense evergreen forest on the Thirthahalli–Agumbe road. At the top stands a quiet Jain temple, with wide views over the forest around it. It is a short and rewarding detour from Agumbe.
Where is Kundadri?
Kundadri is about 16 km from Agumbe and about 12 km from Thirthahalli. Sringeri is about 30 km away and Shivamogga about 90 km.
The temple and its story
A 17th-century temple dedicated to Parshwanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara, stands on the hilltop. It is known as the Parshwanath Chaityalaya, and there are two small ponds beside it. The hill's name is believed to come from Acharya Kundakunda, a Jain monk who is said to have found shelter here.
How to get there
Buses run as far as Thirthahalli and Agumbe. For the last stretch of about 15 km to the foot of the hill you need a private vehicle or a taxi. The road is steep, so inexperienced drivers should take care. A rough, stone-paved path leads up to the temple.
Tips for your visit
- Wear shoes with good grip, as the stone path can be slippery.
- Carry drinking water. There are no shops or facilities at Kundadri.
- Dress modestly and keep quiet, as this is a place of worship.
- Plan to return to town before nightfall.
- Take your litter back with you.
