Barkana View Point: See One of India's Tallest Waterfalls Near Agumbe

Agumbe Guide

Barkana Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India and one of the great sights of the Agumbe region. The Barkana View Point is where most visitors see it: a wide, distant view of the falls and the forested valley, with no hard trek needed.

About Barkana Falls

The falls are formed by the Seetha river as it drops down a tiered cliff in the dense forest of the Western Ghats. They are over 850 feet (about 260 metres) tall, which puts them among the ten tallest waterfalls in India. The falls lie about 10 km from Agumbe.

The view point

From the view point you see the whole fall and the valley below it from a distance. It suits families, older visitors and anyone who does not want a long walk. On a clear morning the view is wide and the green of the forest is deep.

Best time to visit

The falls are strongest during and just after the rains. For the best mix of water and clear skies, go between October and February. In peak monsoon, thick mist can hide the falls from the view point, so be patient and wait for it to clear.

Going closer: the trek

A forest trail to the falls begins near Kigga village, and the Narasimha Parvatha trek also passes the Barkana viewpoint. Forest Department permission is required for these routes, and a local guide is strongly recommended. See our Narasimha Parvatha post for the trek details.

Tips for your visit

  • Carry drinking water and a light rain jacket.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip. Wet rocks and mud are slippery.
  • Stay behind safety barriers and away from cliff edges.
  • Do not litter and do not disturb the wildlife.
